Sound Effect Libraries
Sound effect Libraries are usually sold on a royalty free basic, hence their individual cost
is higher than a commercial music CD. The usual license allows you, the purchaser, to use
the effects in any of your productions. It does NOT allow you to resell the effects as
sound effects.
You tend to get what you pay for. The major catalogs of SFX contain high quality effects
that cost. The cheap libraries usually contain very low fidelity recordings, some even
being directly transferred from records including their "record" sound.
Be aware of the sound effect CDs that you may purchase at "music" stores. The use license
on these usually says for your personal listening and enjoyment, excluding use in broadcast and or
products for sale.
There are a growing number of providers that allow you to purchase and download individual sound effects
which may be convenient when you need something specific. Here again, check the usage's allowed and
the quality before you buy.
